How the conversion works

A full-time year in the US is usually counted as 2,080 hours: 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. So $25 an hour works out to $52,000 a year before tax, and a $60,000 salary is about $28.85 an hour. If you work fewer hours, or some weeks are unpaid, change the hours and weeks above and every figure updates.

Pay periods are worked out from the yearly total: weekly pay × 52 (or your paid weeks), two-weekly pay = weekly × 2, twice-a-month pay = yearly ÷ 24, and monthly pay = yearly ÷ 12. A month is not four weeks: most months are a little over 4.3 weeks long, which is why monthly pay is more than four weekly paychecks.

Overtime

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees must get at least 1.5 times their regular rate for every hour over 40 in a workweek. When you enter an hourly rate and more than 40 hours, the calculator pays the extra hours at time and a half. Salaried workers can also be owed overtime unless they meet an exemption, which needs both a salary of at least $684 a week and certain job duties. For more detail use the overtime calculator.

Minimum wage

The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. Many states and cities set a higher minimum, and where they do, the higher rate applies. The calculator warns you if a rate is below the federal minimum.
