Where these numbers come from

A growing number of US states and cities require employers to put a pay range in their job adverts. USA Jobs 24 reads the official careers sites of 171 employers every day, and 11,544 of the openings we list right now include a range we could read. That gives real, current numbers for what employers say they will pay, rather than survey estimates. 1,710 of them are hourly ranges, which we turn into yearly pay at 2,080 hours (40 hours × 52 weeks).

Each job counts once, at the midpoint of its range. A job advertised at $90,000–$130,000 counts as $110,000. We then show the median midpoint, the middle half of jobs (25th to 75th percentile) and the spread from the 10th to the 90th percentile. We only show a state when it has at least 5 published ranges for that role family; otherwise we fall back to the whole US. We currently have enough data for 51 states.

How to read the result

  • Advertised ranges are for base pay. Bonuses, stock, overtime and benefits are extra and can be worth a lot, especially in tech and sales.
  • Ranges cover every level the employer might hire at, so a single job’s range can be wide. Where you land usually depends on experience and how well you interview.
  • A role family groups many job titles together. A data analyst and a machine learning engineer are both in “data and AI”, so compare carefully.
  • Remote jobs with no state are counted in the US-wide figures only.
