What Regional Price Parities measure
Regional Price Parities (RPPs) are the government’s official measure of how price levels differ from place to place. The Bureau of Economic Analysis sets the national average at 100 each year. An RPP of 110 means prices are 10% above the national average; 90 means 10% below. The index covers what households actually buy: goods, rents and other services, weighted by how much people spend on each.
To compare two places we scale your salary by the ratio of their RPPs. Moving from a place at 112.6 to one at 98.1, for example, means the same lifestyle costs about 13% less, so $75,000 in the first place buys about as much as $65,300 in the second.
Things to keep in mind
- The latest figures are for 2024, published on February 19, 2026. Prices have moved since, but the gaps between places change slowly.
- RPPs are averages for a whole state or metro area. Rent in a city center can be much higher than in its suburbs.
- Taxes are not part of the index. A move from Texas to California changes both prices and state income tax, so check both with the take-home pay calculator.
- Only metro areas with a published 2024 figure are listed. If your city is not here, use its state.
