Remote roles are some of the most popular openings, which means more competition and, sadly, more scams. A little care helps you find the real ones and stand out.
Know what "remote" means in a posting
- Remote (US): you can work from home anywhere in the country, though many employers can only hire in states where they are registered to run payroll. Check for a list of eligible states.
- Remote in a region: for example "Remote, East Coast" or "Remote within Texas". This is often about time zones, travel or state rules.
- Hybrid: some days in an office each week. These roles are listed under a city, not as remote.
On USA Jobs 24, roles marked Remote are listed on the remote jobs page, and every state page also shows the remote roles open to people living there.
Stand out to remote employers
- Show you can work independently: projects you owned end to end, results you delivered without close supervision.
- Mention the tools remote teams use, such as Slack, Zoom, Jira, Notion or Google Workspace.
- Write clearly. Remote teams run on written communication, so your resume and emails are a work sample.
- Make sure you have a reliable internet connection and a quiet place for video calls.
Spot fake work-from-home offers
A genuine remote job:
- Is listed on the company's own careers site, which is where every USA Jobs 24 apply button takes you.
- Includes at least one live interview with a real person, usually on video.
- Never asks you to pay for training or equipment, or to deposit a check and send money back.
- Does not ask you to reship packages, move money, or pay a deposit to "unlock tasks".
