The Senior Manager, Creative Director leads the team behind MongoDB's visual brand. Reporting to the Director, Brand Marketing, this leader owns the creative vision, brand systems, and execution standards that turn brand strategy into consistent, high-impact work across campaigns, events, and digital experiences, and leads the designers who deliver it.
This role is for a creative leader who is still close to the craft and ready to build how a brand design team operates: how concepts get made, how the brand is stewarded and enabled across the company, and how AI is applied to build and accelerate design systems and creative work. We’re not looking for someone to run creative as usual. You will raise the bar, push our brand toward more distinctive and recognizable work, and build a creative engine that moves faster and scales further.
Please submit your portfolio in addition to your resume when applying. This role can be based remotely in the US or in one of our office locations.
What You'll Do
- Lead and develop the Brand Creative design team. Set priorities, define roles and performance standards, coach and grow designers at every level, give clear and direct feedback, build a culture of experimentation and collaboration, and hold a consistent bar for execution across every program.
- Set creative direction. Own concepting and ideation for high-impact brand campaigns and initiatives, translating brand strategy into scalable visual systems across print, digital, motion, and environmental applications.
- Translate technology into story. Make complex, technical products feel clear, relevant, and compelling to developers and enterprise leaders, working with Product Marketing to turn positioning into work people remember.
- Own the brand systems. Steward and evolve typography, iconography, logo, color, and layout frameworks. Keep the brand library, presentation templates, icons, and brand guidelines accurate and up to date.
- Lead AI and generative design. Identify where AI tools can improve speed, quality, and creative possibility. Spark and embrace AI across the team and make it part of everyday practice, while enforcing the guardrails set by the company. Partner across the org to build expertise, share what works, and learn how to solve real problems with AI.
- Lead events and environmental design. Direct the creative for large-scale brand moments (e.g. .local, AWS re:Invent, SKO), from early concept through delivery, in close partnership with Strategic Events.
- Bridge brand and social. Work with Social and Influencer Marketing to extend campaigns and events into platform-native content, with clear creative guidance for creators and partners.
- Stay hands-on. Roll up your sleeves on concepts and key deliverables when the work calls for it, and model the quality and taste you expect from the team.
- Build brand enablement. Create the templates, documentation, and guidance that let teams across the company (and external partners) apply the brand confidently and correctly, including programs beyond marketing.
- Partner across the business. Collaborate with Events, Social, Web, Customer Marketing, Product, Employee Experience, and Corporate Communications to keep every brand touchpoint consistent. Manage agencies, contractors, and specialty disciplines like animation and illustration.
- Plan work and capacity. Prioritize across competing requests, manage timelines and budgets, and surface resourcing risk early so it never becomes a delivery problem.
- Present and influence. Share creative concepts and rationale with senior stakeholders, and clearly explain design decisions and constraints to both creative and non-creative audiences.
Qualifications
- BFA or MA/MS in design, art and design, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
- 8+ years of design experience, ideally with 2+ years managing and developing designers.
- A portfolio that shows event design, campaigns, layout, design systems, and visual storytelling, with clear examples of your creative direction.
- Experience building and operationalizing brand and design systems, ideally for B2B, technology, or SaaS brands.
- Experience directing environmental and event design for large-scale brand moments.
- Advanced knowledge of Adobe and Figma systems, libraries, and scalable brand documentation.
- Hands-on experience applying AI and generative tools to creative workflows, and leading a team to adopt them.
- Experience managing agencies, contractors, and cross-functional creative projects within timelines and budgets.
- Proven ability to influence and align stakeholders across functions and seniority levels.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, including the ability to present creative rationale to non-creative audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience building or evolving a brand identity or design system at scale.
- Experience creating for both large enterprises and startups, and for technical buyers and developers as well as executive decision makers.
- Experience with developer or community-driven marketing.
- A recognized presence in the creative community, such as conference speaking, industry awards, published work, or teaching.
